Weekend movie tip

Korean cinema is one of the finest in the world. Unfortunately most of the films are hard to come by.

Korean cinema has not really been a huge success in the west. Apart from the Vengeance trilogy (Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance, Oldboy, Sympathy for Lady Vengeance) there have not been even one single big hit.

Occasionally though, you will find a korean movie at your local Video store…such as for example last year hit The Chaser(2008).

Jung-ho (Kim) used to be a detective himself before he started pimping, a line of work where casual brutality comes in handy more often than not. Annoyed that a number of his girls have vanished in recent weeks, Jung-ho sends one of his lovelier assets, single mom Mi-jin (Seo Young-hee), to service regular client Young-min (Ha Jung-woo) one night, only afterward deducing that the latter may be responsible for the girls’ disappearances.

What I found particularly interesting with this movie was it’s somewhat different narrative. In the usual crime-thriller its all about finding out who is the killer. In the Chaser, the killer’s identity is exposed early on. The question is rather, will he get caught?

The Chaser is a good movie. Its not a great movie. It had 2 wins and 3 nominations last year, but it won’t break any new barriers in film making. Its not on my top 10 list of Korean movies. However if you are looking for a fairly fast paced, easy to watch, crime thriller with a different twist on the narrative, The Chaser is a good pick!
